History:
John Madejski, the publisher of 'Auto Trader,' transformed Reading's fortunes in the mid-1990s, and in 2006 the Berkshire club which now plays in a handsome new stadium bearing Madejski's name reached the top flight of English football for the first time in its 135-year history. The highly respected Steve Coppell guided them through a phenomenal season in 2005-06 when they won the Championship by a country mile, setting records along the way and finishing a remarkable 16 points ahead of second-placed Sheffield United. Their 106 points represented a record haul for any club in any division, and Coppell has a solid foundation on which to establish the Royals as a Premiership side. The club began life at a public meeting in the town's Bridge Street Rooms in 1871, and amalgamated with Reading Hornets in 1877. The club was further strengthened in 1889 when Earley FC joined them. Reading became original members of the newly formed Football League Division Three in 1920 but spent most of their time as a Football League club in the bottom two divisions with just occasional spells in level two until the current regime started to make things happen.
